Darlington RA Over-40s are back in action at Brinkburn Road on Saturday morning (10.30) in a crunch clash with The Philadelphia.
The teams are locked on 16 points in the Sunderland and District Sunderland Mill View Social Club Over-40s League.
Each having won five of their nine fixtures with RA fourth, and the Sunderland-based opposition one place below on goal difference.
The RA boosted their goal difference with a thumping 5-0 win last weekend at Houghton Cricket Club, though they could have hit double figures had they worn their shooting boots.
It was a result which avenged an opening-day 3-2 defeat and came with goals from five different scorers.
Daz Hickey, captain Mikey Weston, Kev Baines, Barry Raper and Gokhan Yilmaz were all on target in a dominant display.
Hickey got the ball rolling by opening the scoring with a terrific strike, arrowing the ball into the top corner from 35 yards. Daz optimistically claims it was from at least 50 yards…
It was the team’s second clean sheet of the season, with goalkeeper Andrew Scullion eager to take all of the credit despite fumbling the only shot he had to save.
The team’s controversial rotation policy means Scullion will not be between the sticks tomorrow, with Paul Colman and Steve Hoare vying for the No. 1 spot for the fixture.
Two of the the scorers from last weekend, Hickey and Baines, are unavailable, as are defender Gary Eggleston and Covid-afflicted striker Stuart Cottam.
But RA are boosted by Craig Swainston and Alan White returning to the fray, and new signing Paul Thorns is in the squad.
The Philadelphia last week out an end to a three-game losing run, winning 2-1 at home to ninth-placed Houghton Burn.
Kick-off at Brinkburn Road is 10.30 and spectators are welcome.
