Lexus Beeden is in line to become one of Darlington’s next signings.
The towering defender is a free agent, and will help plug a gap at the back.
Alun Armstrong’s squad needs strengthening in the centre of defence, where last season the experienced Nicky Hunt failed to live up to the hopes generated by signing a player with Premier League pedigree.
An aggressive, commanding player is needed to beef up the backline, and Armstrong will hope 21-year-old Beeden will be the man for the job.
He was with Reading for the 2019-20 season, the Championship club signing the then 19-year-old for an undisclosed fee from Tooting & Mitcham United.
Beeden was one of 14 youngsters Reading released in a mass clear-out in July 2020, then joining Welling at the beginning of last season, but his time at the National League South club ended in December.
Armstrong has already welcomed the arrival this weekend of former Buxton goalkeeper Tommy Taylor, as revealed first by North East Sport News.
Other new signings this summer have been right-back Kallum Griffiths and attacker Junior Mondal.
As well as Taylor, Darlington are close to bringing in left-back Joey Hope. The 18-year-old from Scorton was with Grimsby Town last season, making one senior appearance.
