North East Sport News is the new home for non-league football and grassroots sport coverage in the North-East and North Yorkshire. Launched in autumn 2020 by sport-loving journalists Craig Stoddart and Joe Willis, the website aims to provide comprehensive and authoritative coverage of the lower football leagues and amateur game in the region. But it’s not just about football – we’re starting with football but we are planning to grow to cover more grassroots sports from across the region.

Craig Stoddart, co-editor

Craig has been a sports journalist for the last 20 years. For the last 10 years he was deputy sports editor at The Northern Echo, where he predominantly covered the fortunes of Darlington FC during an interesting and somewhat turbulent period. There were three periods of administration, three promotions, a win at Wembley and four different home venues, plus there was George Reynolds to deal with. He also wrote on other aspects of North East sport, including Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Sunderland, and was integral to Local Heroes, the paper’s popular grassroots supplement.

Joe Willis, co-editor

Joe is a former North East Journalist of the Year winner who has worked in the regional press for more than 15 years. He left The Northern Echo in 2016 to launch his own media business and now runs several local news websites in the region, as well as publishing a monthly magazine. Joe played grassroots football for 20 years in the Wensleydale Creamery League and is now vice-chair of Leyburn Utd JFC. He is an FA level one coach who runs the club’s U8s team.
